And it's because the villagers are way too nice now. I'll also never forgive them for making Blathers boring, or Resetti no longer scary. I almost bought New Horizons until my friend told me that the villagers were just as nice as from New Leaf. What is the point of having different personality types when they're all brown-nosing you? It just makes the game so dull, despite the pretty graphics and design features. I've recently started playing Wild World again, I think it's the best one imo. I like how the Cranky and Snooty villagers are so rude, but then open up and end up becoming the sweetest once you work for it and let the relationship flourish. If you wanted an easy friendship, that's what the Peppy and Lazy personalities are for. Idk, I just feel like this with every game franchise. They just focus on the graphics and making it all look pretty, but remove the soul of what made the game so perfect in the past.
I agree with you. I was such a huge Animal Crossing fan for so much of my life, playing every game so obsessively from the very beginning. How odd it feels to no longer have enjoyment or interest in the series after all of that! I really do miss that experience of feeling like the villagers are really becoming my friends. When my favorite grumpy villager Butch opening up and being nicer was such a sweet experience! In the newer games everyone just loves you from the start, and honestly all the characters to me feel more interchangeable then ever as their unique characteristics get eroded into a friendlier, staler character. The characters are a huge part of the appeal to me, so seeing them become more boring really does suck.
Another thing that bothered me about the new game is the way that it was released and felt unfinished, and they're still adding things that to me feels like should have been core features from the beginning... Of course that is arguably just changing times and how games work these days and I'm just an old grump. Games don't come out as a full complete experience, everything is DLC you'll get later... Blah. For me that really pushed my interest in the series off a cliff. I heard about how much stuff was missing from New Horizons and was like ... meh... I guess though a lot of people love that change, and it's spicing up the game to get new stuff added... Big updates renew people's interest and inspires them to play again. But to me it just feels lazy. So I didn't play it, simple. I don't like something I don't buy it.
I still enjoyed New Leaf, but New Horizons just doesn't look fun to me and would have been a waste of my money if I bought it. Alas! Oh well, good for all the people who do like it. I'll go play other games that suit my tastes better.
